Hilton Harrisburg's $5M renovation slated for 2013 start

By - Last modified: December 12, 2012 at 10:36 AM

The first phase of a planned $5 million renovation at the Hilton Harrisburg is expected to begin by late January or early February, General Manager Joe Massaro said.

The 341-room Hilton was purchased in June by Colorado-based Greenwood Hospitality Group as part of its acquisition of Harrisburg Hotel Corp., the hospitality affiliate of Harristown Enterprises Inc.

Facility improvements were tied to the $22.2 million sale, Massaro said. The deal also included Bricco restaurant and management of the Hilton Garden Inn Hershey.

Hasu Shah, founder of Hersha Hospitality Trust, filed a federal lawsuit last month over the sale, calling it a "sweetheart deal."

An initial telephone conference on the suit has been scheduled for Jan. 18, according to court documents.

Renovation details

Massaro said the first part of the project will be an overhaul of all guest room bathrooms.

"They will be completely renovated," he said.

That work will be done one floor at a time and could take about five months to complete, he said. The hotel has 15 floors.

Bedroom changes will follow and will focus on items such as furniture and carpeting, Massaro said.

Lobby and restaurant design work will take place once designs are approved for guest rooms, he said. He expects a new layout and furnishings in the lobby, he said, plus a potential food and beverage addition.

New concepts will be discussed for the dining areas in the hotel, Massaro said.

"We are looking for minimal guest impact," he said of the entire project, which should be done in 2014.

The Hilton's meeting space, which totals about 28,000 square feet, will retain current dimensions and configurations, he said. However, those spaces also will be refurbished.

Minor landscaping changes could be possible, but it's still early in the process, Massaro said.
