Dart Container cutting ribbon for landfill gas project

By - Last modified: November 30, 2012 at 9:53 AM

Dart Container Corp. is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony today for its landfill-gas-to-energy cogeneration project at its Leola manufacturing plant in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County.

Dart says it will use gases recovered from the Lanchester Landfill in Lancaster and Chester counties and the Conestoga Landfill in Berks County to produce energy. The gas would otherwise escape into the atmosphere; the company estimates the air pollution reductions will be equivalent to reducing gasoline consumption by 54 million gallons a year.

Dart is a multinational manufacturer of foam cups and containers. It is based in Mason, Mich., where it announced a $47 million expansion this week. Besides Leola, the company has a facility in East Lampeter Township in Lancaster County.

Staff reporter Tim Stuhldreher will be at today's ribbon-cutting; follow him on Twitter, @timstuhldreher, for live tweets from the event.
