Markant execs named minority business persons of year

By ,

The U.S. Small Business Administration named two executives from Carlisle-based Markant Corp. as 2012's Minority Small Business Persons of the Year for Eastern Pennsylvania.

The SBA gave the award Wednesday to Markant CEO Ivelisse Alemany and Chief Financial Officer Carl W. Hintz for their successes in operating a small, woman-owned information technology services business that’s seen considerable success over the past several years.

“It’s a very nice business,” said SBA District Director David C. Dickson in presenting Alemany and Hintz with the honor. “You’re doing very well. … I’d like to use you as a model for other companies in the region.”

Markant’s executives were chosen over about 90 other woman- and minority-owned businesses for the honor, Dickson said. The eastern Pennsylvania district of SBA includes about 727,000 small businesses in 40 counties. Winning the district honors made Alemany and Hintz eligible for larger regional recognition, in which they placed second, Dickson said.

Alemany, a Puerto Rico native, said the distinction meant a great deal to her because there are very few Hispanic women running IT companies.

“To me, it’s very refreshing because we’re usually behind the scenes and our employees do most the work,” she said.

Although the executives are behind the scenes, Hintz said that doesn’t do justice to the hard work that goes into running a small company.

“There are a lot of sleepless hours that go into a company, and it’s good to be recognized for that,” he said.

Alemany and Hintz started Markant in 2007. Today, the company has 32 employees.

Since then, Markant’s business in government contracting for IT services and consulting has grown about 30 percent a year, Hintz said. They would like to see it continue growing 25 percent a year, but competition is fierce, he said.

Markant, located at the Murata Business Center, offers staffing and consulting in Internet security, computer systems integration, program management, database development and Web-based application services, as well as professional business-support services.
