Ahold USA, the parent of Giant Food Stores, today said it has appointed Chief Commercial & Development Officer James McCann to replace Chief Operating Officer Carl Schlicker, who plans to retire in February.
Schlicker, who has been with Ahold's companies for more than 25 years, was appointed the COO in 2011. He formerly was the president and CEO of Stop & Shop and the Giant Landover division in Maryland, as well as president and CEO of Giant Food Stores based in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County. Schlicker will continue in an advisory capacity to the executive board after Feb. 1.
"During his last 25 years with Ahold, Carl has helped to build a very strong foundation for Ahold USA through his focus on operational excellence and driving customer loyalty by delivering value, quality and service," said Dick Boer, CEO of Royal Ahold, the Dutch parent of the U.S. division.
McCann has more than 20 years of experience in the retail industry, starting his career with energy company Royal Dutch Shell, then working for candy maker Mars Inc. in the United Kingdom and Russia before moving to a number of European-based retailers.
McCann will be moving to the U.S. early next year to begin management of Ahold USA from the company's split headquarters in Cumberland County and Quincy, Mass.
