Rovegno: Transit cooperation needs governance study

Rick Rovegno, a member of the I-81 Corridor Coalition and former Cumberland County commissioner, told the current board today that more research is needed on how Central Pennsylvania's transit agencies can govern any cooperative management for more efficient transportation systems.

"(The review) shows significant savings to do things together administratively," Rovegno said during the commissioners' workshop today.

He did not say how much could be saved from operations.

For two years, the midstate's transit agencies have been studying how they can work together for greater efficiency in public transportation. Last year, when they released a study, they said cooperation between the agencies would be best and no one was immediately talking about merging the agencies.

At this point, the agencies and supporting county administrations would have to study operational and governance structures for any cooperative efforts or potential joint management, Rovegno said. There is no immediate plan for such a study, he said.

The commissioners did not take action.
