WellSpan Health President and CEO Bruce Bartels plans to retire at the end of 2013.

WellSpan spokesman Barry Sparks confirmed the announcement this morning and said the board of directors will work with Bartels to develop transition plans and begin the task of identifying a new leader.

Bartels has served as the president of WellSpan and its predecessor organizations since 1988. Before that, he was chief operating officer of the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and also held positions in health administration at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and the University of Chicago.

Bartels holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.

He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and participates on several boards, including the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, VHA Pennsylvania Inc. and The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

Wellspan is based in York Township and, at last report, employed more than 6,600 full-time and 1,100 part-time employees.
