The amount of cargo flying in and out of Harrisburg International Airport is down considerably from the last two years — 6 percent from last year — even as the airport's passenger numbers surge slightly following airline additions, according to airport statistics.
Numbers from HIA’s operator, the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority, show that total cargo shipped through the airport was more than 4,543 tons in August, a 9.3 percent drop from last year. Year-to-date total tonnage was just shy of 33,751, or about 6 percent less than last year.
For most of the year, cargo tonnage also has been below 2010 levels, according to the statistics.
The cargo drops are driven by a down year for FedEx Corp. and other cargo operations at the airport. Tennessee-based FedEx’s cargo through HIA dropped nearly 14 percent for the year, compared to 2011, according to airport statistics. Other cargo operations were down more than 16 percent. Georgia-based UPS cargo was up 10.4 percent from last year.
Conversely, there have been 895,656 total passengers traveling through HIA year-to-date as of August, a 3.1 percent increase from last year, according to the airport.
