Flanked by U.S. Rep. Tim Holden and the state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, developers on Tuesday broke ground on a $6.2 million Candlewood Suites hotel in the TecPort Business Center.

The four-story, 71-room hotel is slated for a late June completion, said Aman Parekh, managing member of Hampden Township-based TecPort Hospitality LLC.

The hotel, which is adjacent to the Harrisburg Mall, will be 44,000 square feet and cater more to extended-stay business customers, the developers said.

The Candlewood Suites also expects to serve as another option for summer leisure travelers venturing between Harrisburg and Hershey, Parekh said.

“It would be nice to hit the Hersheypark season,” he said of the summer opening.

TecPort Hospitality received a $4.6 million loan guarantee from the USDA through Swatara Township-based Metro Bank.

The new TecPort hotel is expected to employ about 15 full-time employees.
