United Steelworkers Local 1688, which represents about 580 workers at the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Steelton, rallied Thursday on Front Street in the borough in a show of solidarity with the 14,000 other members of their union negotiating a new contract this week.

The union’s contract with Chicago-based ArcelorMittal USA expires at the end of the day Sept. 1, according to the company. The contract covers 15 plants across the U.S., including the Steelton and Conshohocken facilities in Pennsylvania.

The Steelworkers have said the company is asking them to take cuts in pay and benefits, but everyone is working on an agreement to avoid work stoppages.

ArcelorMittal will not comment on specific details of the negotiations, spokeswoman Mary Beth Holdford said today.
