The frozen yogurt trend continues in Central Pennsylvania.
The owners of an independent company — Mixies Frozen Yogurt — are expecting an October opening of their first business at 247 W. Chocolate Ave. in Derry Township.
“We chose Hershey because it is our hometown and we think the store will make a great addition to the downtown community for residents and visitors alike,” said Gregg Mangione, who has been working on this business idea with his wife, Antonia, for about two years.
At its core, Mixies will be similar to many of the self-serve froyo companies that have emerged in the midstate.
The business hopes to stand out from the chains and other independents by focusing on a flavorful and premium product that is low in sugar and fat compared with other dairy products, Mangione said.
Mixies also will use biodegradable alternatives to plastic spoons and focus on maintaining a clean, comfortable and friendly environment, he said.
“We chose to operate as an independent business versus a franchise or licensee because of the freedom it offers,” he said. “We feel we can be more innovative and flexible with our business more quickly. Plus, the creative part of the business is the most fun. We also did not see a long-term benefit of going the franchise route for the added costs.”
Mixies will offer 10 different flavors of yogurt to start. The plan is to expand to smoothies, bottled drinks and coffee in the evenings by next spring, Mangione said.
