The Patriot-News announced this morning that, beginning Jan. 1, it will reduce its print editions to three days a week.
“We are not making this move lightly,” John Kirkpatrick, president and publisher of The Patriot-News, said in a news release. “We understand how important the daily paper is to a large number of people in our region. However, this is a major step to make sure we are leading, not trailing, in the world of innovation and solutions.”
Other planned changes include forming two new companies.
One, a digitally focused news and information company called PA Media Group, will publish and operate The Patriot-News, PennLive, Central PA Magazine and “their growing suite of print and digital products.”
The second, Advance Central Services Pennsylvania, will “provide key support functions to the PA Media Group,” according to the release.
The release noted that The Patriot-News plans to announce further details and how they will affect employees, readers and advertisers over the coming weeks and months. According to an announcement on PennLive, the paper will be printed Sundays, with the two other days to be decided “after gathering input from readers and advertisers.”
Kirkpatrick will become president of the PA Media Group, and D. Lee Carlson, currently general manager of The Patriot-News, will serve as vice president and general manager of Advance Central Services Pennsylvania.
The company said more than 200,000 readers a day visited PennLive during last fall’s floods and during ongoing coverage of the Jerry Sandusky child-sex-abuse scandal and Penn State story.
"The print and digital mediums complement each other to meet the needs of our growing digital audience, our loyal print readers and our advertising clients,” Kirkpatrick said.
