A planned Senate hearing to take a look at Harrisburg's incinerator debt and issues raised by the January forensic audit has been postponed.

The state Senate Local Government Committee was scheduled to meet Aug. 29.

The official statement was that the committee needs to pursue additional material information identified in the audit.

A new date has not been decided, said Republican Sen. John Eichelberger of Blair County, the committee's chairman.

"We're at the end of a session and the committee will probably change in January, so we will need to complete the hearings this fall," he said.

In announcing the hearing, Eichelberger said the forensic examination raised numerous concerns about the role the debt of a municipal authority can play in the financial distress of a community.

The committee wants to find out whether the debt was due to a lack of compliance with current laws or whether changes are needed to better protect taxpayers, he said.

The Aug. 29 hearing was to be the first of multiple sessions on the subject.
