Tristate partnership receives manufacturing grant

A partnership that includes Pennsylvania, northeast Ohio and West Virginia is moving forward with a project to improve the region's advanced manufacturing technology and workforce.

The partnership, TechBelt, received a $30 million U.S. Department of Defense grant to develop the Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, Gov. Tom Corbett said in a statement late last week.

The institute will partner with colleges, universities, companies and the state’s Industrial Resource Centers to develop training courses, Corbett said. The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining in Latrobe will lead the effort.

Additive manufacturing creates highly complex parts by additive layering, sometimes called 3-D printing. The technology has applications in aircraft, fossil-fuel-extraction equipment, robotics, electronics, medical devices and “smart” materials.
