The Olympics may be over in London, but there are some local challenges that even a gold-medal-winning Olympian wouldn't attempt. But Central Pennsylvanians can't seem to get enough of these extreme bites.
First up is the beastly Meatzza Pizza at Casero Pizza & Specialty Breads in New Cumberland. This 20-inch, XXL meat pie is loaded with hot Italian sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, salami, ham and cheese, and weighs in at more than 5 pounds. Only the brave should attempt to "Defeatzza the Meatzza," a challenge for which you must consume the entire pie in 40 minutes or less. If you're victorious, it's free. Otherwise, it'll cost you around $20, but Casero will donate that money to the Wounded Warrior Project. Everyone wins!
Want a gigantic pizza but scared of all that meat? Try the Weganator at Wegmans in Mechanicsburg, a 30-inch pie that boasts a whopping 16 slices. Or go with the 28-inch King Kong pizza at the Crazy Tomato in York.
Speaking of meat, how about a 22-pound burger challenge? Well, actually, the 22 Under Par at Hogan's (at Valley Green Golf Course) in Newberry Township, York County, consists of a 17-pound burger with 5 pounds of fries, hence the number 22. If you and up to two friends can finish the two 5-pound certified Angus beef patties topped with 1 pound of cheese, 1 pound of applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and onions on a homemade bun within one hour, this $122 monster is on the house. Plus, you'll get a commemorative t-shirt and your photo in the restaurant and on the website.
Go for more beef at The Glass Lounge in Harrisburg, a steak-lover's dream. Regular menu items include 23- to 24-ounce Delmonico, New York Strip, Porterhouse and T-Bone steaks, along with a 27-ounce Super Sirloin. How's that for a steak?
If you're a lightweight but still have a healthy appetite for meat, there's always the 2.5-pound Boss Burger at White Rose Bar & Grill in York. And don't forget about The Meatball, a 12-ounce ball of deliciousness found at Carley's Ristorante & Piano Bar in Harrisburg.
Save room for dessert! Can you rock The Earthquake at Doc's Family Fun Center's Rock and Roll Malt Shop in Middletown? Down this 12-scoop sundae in 12 minutes or less and you'll get a spot on the wall of fame.
And then there's the Gorilla Split at King Kone Creamery in Hummelstown. If you can polish of this monstrosity made with 10 scoops of ice cream, six toppings, two bananas, tons of whipped cream and four cherries, you'll be photographed and entered in the shop's prize drawing.
For a dessert that takes the cake, or um, pie, stop by Burkharts' Bakery in East Petersburg. The bakery is known for its Big Whoop, a whoopie pie so colossal that it'll fill an entire dinner plate. Can you whoop the Big Whoop?
Karn's Quality Foods locations in the area make a 7-inch whoopie pie that's a bit smaller but just as impressive.
