Beginning Aug. 1, the American Red Cross will hand operation of its Hanover Food Pantry and Family Center over to New Hope Ministries.

The program will continue to operate in the lower level of the American Red Cross building at 529 Carlisle St., Hanover. Eric Saunders, executive director of the Dillsburg-based ministry, said the center serves about 3,500 people each year with food, various forms of assistance, training and accountability. This center will be New Hope’s second-largest undertaking.

“Our relationships with the local business community are critical to what we do,” Saunders said. “We depend upon not only the faith-based community and the philanthropic community, but also businesses’ in-kind contributions.”

Saunders estimated the center’s budget for this year at about $130,000 and $500,000 in in-kind contributions. About half the center’s yearly funding comes from United Way of York County, he said, and some other existing sources also have transferred their giving to New Hope.

New Hope created two staff positions for the center and also will need about 75 regular volunteers to assist with everything from answering phones to teaching budgeting classes to putting food on shelves, Saunders said.

Matt Leininger, American Red Cross Hanover chapter executive, said in a news release that New Hope’s handling the center will allow the chapter to concentrate on its core services, which include disaster relief, first aid, blood products, and service to military members and their families.

New Hope Ministries has assistance centers in Dillsburg, Dover, Hanover and Mechanicsburg and reports helping close to 7,000 people each year through its various programs.
