Giant adds beer sales at York store

Giant Food Stores has opened an in-store restaurant that sells beer at its Springettsbury Township location in York County, the Carlisle-based supermarket chain said today.

The Beer Garden and Eatery at 2415 E. Market St. is Giant’s third outlet selling beer in Pennsylvania and the first in the midstate, spokesman Chris Brand said. Giant is operating it under a restaurant liquor license.

In addition to a mix of domestic and imported mass market and craft beers, the restaurant will offer sandwiches, soups, a salad bar, baked goods, desserts and nonalcoholic beverages, Giant said.

The state Supreme Court in 2010 upheld supermarkets’ right to sell beer, including takeout, at in-store restaurants that meet certain specifications. Giant, Weis Markets Inc. and Wegmans are among the chains that do so.
