A national company with local divisions in York and Lancaster counties has purchased East Donegal Township, Lancaster County-based Edie Waste Inc.

Republic Services Inc., based in Phoenix, Ariz., acquired the waste disposal company effective Saturday, said Mark Pergolese, general manager of the Pennsylvania division of Republic.

He manages Republic Services of Pennsylvania, based in Manchester Township, York County, which does business as York Waste Disposal Inc. The company also has a satellite division in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County.

The price of the acquisition is not being released, Pergolese said.

York Waste was interested in Edie because of “the reputation that they have in the marketplace that was built on customer service and safety,” he said.

Pergolese said York Waste, though nationally owned, operates as a locally based company with more than 250 employees and purchases goods and services locally.

“When we talk about that, we like to say ‘hometown hustle with national muscle,’” he said.

Chris Edie, founder and president of Edie, will remain with York Waste’s new division, though his title has not been decided yet, Pergolese said.

“He will be a vital part to the success of this acquisition,” he said.

Most of the 40 or so employees will be retained, he said.

The company name will not immediately change, and the containers at customer locations will remain, Pergolese said. Eventually, Edie will transition its name to Republic’s, he said.

Before the end of the year, the East Hempfield Township site of York Waste will be relocated and folded into Edie’s location, he said.

Founded in 1998, Edie offers residential and commercial waste disposal, recycling services, portable toilet rentals, waste audits and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, services.

Republic operates in 41 states and Puerto Rico, Pergolese said. Its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol RSG.
