Phoenix Contact planning major expansion in Lower Swatara Twp.

Phoenix Contact USA could spend $18 million to $24 million to add about 115,000 square feet to its Lower Swatara Township complex, said Doug Ferguson, director of U.S. operations services.

The Dauphin County-based electronic components manufacturer, a subsidiary of Germany-based Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co., has been in discussions with the township about the expansion.

Phoenix Contact would like to add about 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space to the Fulling Mill Road complex, Ferguson said. The balance of the expansion would be for engineering, product development and support services, he said.

Currently, the headquarters, manufacturing and distribution facilities encompass about 240,000 square feet, he said.

Driven by sizable sales growth — 16 percent in 2011 compared to 2010 — the company has added about 100 employees in the past 18 months, spokeswoman Molly McGowan said.

The company makes connectors and other components for industrial machinery.

The expansion is needed to keep up with the people already hired and planned growth this year, she said. The company could add about 50 more employees, she said.

Phoenix Contact employs 614 people in the U.S. About 500 of those employees work at the Lower Swatara Township complex, McGowan said.

If the project is ultimately approved, construction should take nearly a year, Ferguson said.

"We were hoping we would be able to break ground in July or August and finish around next June," he said. "With some (code) complications, we don't know if that timeline is realistic."

The plan was tabled in April by the township's planning commission.
