PinnacleHealth System on Thursday held an open house at its new surgical skills lab on Second Street in Harrisburg.
The 1,800-square-foot area houses equipment and tools to practice about 100 types of procedures, said Dr. Anastasius Peter, program director for the health system's surgery residency.
Each item is exactly the same as what would be used in an actual surgery, from the operating room trays to the laparoscopic operating tools, he said.
The room is used by Pinnacle's medical students and residents, he said.
"Our goal is to partner with other local hospitals for training as well," Peter said.
The health system previously had small surgical training spaces in two different locations, so it decided to centralize and enlarge its lab for about $100,000, he said.
"It allows the users to learn in an environment where they're not under pressure, and gain experience," he said as a nearby medical student practiced closing off simulated veins with laparoscopic equipment.
About 50 to 100 people will use the lab monthly, though Pinnacle hopes to increase that number, Peter said.
