Commission votes on final transportation recommendations

The governor's Transportation Funding Advisory Commission today voted to send its final recommendations that will raise about $2.7 billion in extra money for highways, bridges and transit in Pennsylvania.

The commission's proposals and final report that will go to Gov. Tom Corbett on Aug. 1 will include:

  • Removing the cap on the oil and franchise tax to raise $272 million in one year and about $1.36 billion over five years.
  • Capping and moving about $300 million in state police funding back to the general fund in five years.
  • Raising vehicle registration from $36 to $49 for cars, and from about $1,700 to $2,000 annually for trucks more than 80,000 pounds.
  • Adding modernization initiatives in PennDOT including red light cameras, eight-year drivers' licenses and greater efficiency in completing transportation projects.

The commission also recommended legislative action to enable local transportation fundraising, public private partnerships and revisions to existing transportation law that will direct $450 million from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to transit capital projects.

The commission also recommended legislation that would enable tolling all interstates with proceeds to remain for the upkeep and improvement of the highway tolled.

Transportation is a term which is used for the movements of people and goods etc,etc. from one place to another for some purposes and there are so many modes of transportation.
