The credit union completed a move from Harrisburg to its new operations center in Swatara Township June 25.
Belco moved 83 employees from the cramped downtown headquarters to the suburban location, which has room to accommodate the credit union’s expansion plans. Bankers are challenging those expansion plans in court.
For Belco President and Chief Executive Officer Lonny Maurer, the move out of the city is bittersweet.
“It is sad, but it’s also a rebirth of our credit union, too,” he said.
Belco is keeping its downtown branch office. The credit union agreed to sell the floor above the branch and an adjacent building it owns to developer J. Alex Hartzler.
Hartzler, president of Harrisburg-based WCI Partners, plans to build a hotel next door, on the corner of Second and State streets. Hartzler is offering the Belco property for sale or lease. To sell, Hartzler is asking $810,000 for the area above the Belco branch and $750,000 for the adjacent building, said his real estate agent, James W. Brady of Landmark Commercial Realty Inc. in Cumberland County.
