Cedar Crest High School Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra will present their 2nd Annual Masterworks Concert, Friday, April 5, 7:30 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. The groups will perform John Rutter’s "Requiem" under the direction of Mrs. Martha Pierce, Dr. Christopher D. Campbell, and Ms. Cheryl Kulikowski. The combined ensemble represents eighty of the best vocal and instrumental students at Cedar Crest and will feature Brenda Ruth Bollinger as a soprano soloist and Andrea Smith as a cello soloist.
John Rutter’s Requiem is a musical setting of an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, and was first performed in 1985. Dedicated to the memory of his father, who had died the previous year, it is widely considered his most beautiful and exquisite composition. Rutter employs a non-traditional approach, including movements based on scriptural texts - Psalm 130 (Out of the Deep) and Psalm 23 (The Lord Is My Shepherd), and excerpts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The seven sections of the work form an arch-like meditation on the themes of life and death. In his own words, Rutter stated that he wanted to write intimate rather than grandiose, contemplative and lyric rather than dramatic, and ultimately move towards light rather than darkness. Please consider joining us for an evening of beautiful music.
